Tanya Hamilton is an American film director and producer. She is known for her amazing work behind the camera, bringing stories to life on the big screen and television. Tanya was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica. When she was eight years old, she moved to the United States with her mother and settled in Maryland. She studied at several great schools, including the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and Columbia University.
Her first project was a short film called The Killers, which came out in 1997. This film won awards at the Berlin International Film Festival and from New Line Cinema. Her first full-length movie was Night Catches Us. This film tells the story of people who used to be part of an important group, reuniting in 1976 in Philadelphia.
In 2011, Tanya Hamilton received an award for her directing from the Athena Film Festival. She was also nominated for a Black Reel Award for best director for Night Catches Us. The movie itself was nominated for many other awards, including the Independent Spirit Awards, four Image Awards, a Gotham Awards, and the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
