Taqwa Pinero, born Taquan Dean on August 6, 1983, is an American professional basketball player. He played for many teams during his career. His last team was Élan Béarnais Pau-Lacq-Orthez in France. He officially retired from playing basketball in 2023.

About Taqwa Pinero
Early Life and College Basketball
Taqwa Pinero was born in Red Bank, New Jersey. He went to Neptune High School in Neptune Township, New Jersey.
He became a star college basketball player at the University of Louisville. He studied justice administration there. During his four years in college, he scored 1,657 points. He also made 361 three-point field goals.
In 2005, he helped his team, Louisville, reach the Final Four of the NCAA tournament. Even after this big achievement, he chose to stay for his senior year. He finished his college career as the player with the most three-point field goals made for his school.
Professional Career
After college, Taqwa Pinero was not chosen in the 2006 NBA draft. However, he still started his professional basketball journey.
Playing in Different Countries
In 2006, he signed with Pallacanestro Biella in the Italian League. Later that season, he moved to Dynamo Moscow in Russia. In 2007, he returned to Italy to play for Junior Casale Monferrato.
In July 2008, Pinero played for the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. That same year, he joined the Spanish team Murcia.
In 2009, he signed a one-year contract with Unicaja Málaga, a Spanish team that played in the Euroleague. He then had short stays with Saski Baskonia and Kavala B.C. in Greece. From 2010 to 2012, he played for Scandone Avellino in Italy. He also played briefly for Valencia in Spain and Aliağa Petkim in Turkey in 2012. He returned to Scandone Avellino from 2012 to 2014.
In August 2014, he signed with San Sebastián Gipuzkoa in Spain. He left that team in April 2015. Later that month, he joined Mahram Tehran in Iran.
In July 2015, Pinero signed with Socar Petkim in Turkey. In April 2016, he rejoined San Sebastián Gipuzkoa for the rest of that season.
Name Change and Personal Life
In October 2016, Taquan Dean legally changed his name to Taqwa Pinero. This happened after a DNA test showed that the man he thought was his father was not his biological father. He also converted to Islam and chose an Arabic given name.
After changing his name, Pinero signed with Hoops Club in Lebanon in October 2016. Two months later, he joined Iberostar Tenerife in Spain. He left that team in February 2017. Later that month, he signed with the French club Élan Béarnais Pau-Lacq-Orthez. He signed a new two-year contract with them in June 2017. He played for them until his retirement in 2023.
