Tarek William Saab Halabi (Arabic: طارق وليام صعب حلبي; born 10 September 1962) is a Venezuelan politician, lawyer, and poet. He was a leader of the Fifth Republic Movement (MVR) party, which was started by Hugo Chávez, a former President of Venezuela. Chávez even called him "The poet of the revolution."

Saab served as the Governor of Anzoátegui state from 2004 to 2012. He also became a member of the Committee for Justice and Truth in 2013. In December 2014, the National Assembly chose him to be the "People's Defender," also known as the Ombudsman. This role means he helps protect people's rights. On 5 August 2017, he was appointed as the Attorney General by the National Constituent Assembly.

Early Life and Education

Tarek William Saab was born on 10 September 1962. His family were merchants from Lebanon. He started studying law in 1985 at Santa Maria University. He finished his law degree and became an attorney in 1992.

Political Career

After Hugo Chávez became president, Tarek William Saab joined the Constituent Assembly in 1999. This group helped write the new Constitution of Venezuela. In 2000, he was elected to be a member of the Venezuelan National Assembly.

During a difficult time in April 2002, Saab was held by security forces for a few hours. This happened after a group of protesters gathered near his home.

In October 2002, Saab was in charge of the foreign policy group for Venezuela's National Assembly. He was not allowed to enter the United States at that time.

Governor of Anzoátegui State

Saab was elected as the Governor of Anzoátegui state in 2004. He was re-elected for a second term in 2008.

Ombudsman Role

In 2014, Saab was chosen by the parliament to be the Ombudsman for seven years. The Ombudsman is like a public defender who protects the rights of citizens.

Attorney General

On 5 August 2017, the National Constituent Assembly appointed Tarek William Saab as the Attorney General. This position is a very important legal role in the country.

On 14 June 2018, he was also appointed as the president of the Truth Commission.

Literary Work

Tarek William Saab started writing poems when he was 14 years old. He published his early poems in a local newspaper called Antorcha. Later, in the 1980s, his poems appeared in Papel Literario de El Nacional, a well-known literary section.

He was inspired by American poets from the Beat Generation, like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. He also enjoyed reading the German novelist Herman Hesse.

In 1993, he was chosen to represent Venezuela at a special literature forum in Spain.

His book, Los Niños del Infortunio (The Children of Misfortune), was written after he visited a medical mission in Pakistan. This visit was suggested by Cuban President Fidel Castro in 2005. The book was presented at a book fair in Cuba the next year. Both Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez were there. Chávez called him "the poet of the revolution."
