Tarence Anthony Kinsey (born March 21, 1984) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a shooting guard or small forward. Tarence played for teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA), like the Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers. He also spent many years playing for different teams across Europe. Before turning pro, he played college basketball for the University of South Carolina.
College Basketball Days
Tarence Kinsey went to the University of South Carolina for college. He played basketball for the Gamecocks. He helped his team win the NIT (National Invitation Tournament) championship two times in a row. During the NIT Tournament, he averaged 19.4 points per game. He also grabbed 4.2 rebounds and made 3.2 assists per game.
Winning the NIT Championship
In 2005, when Tarence was a junior, his team reached the NIT championship game. They were playing against St. Joseph's University. With only 6 seconds left, the score was tied at 57-57. A player from St. Joe's hit a three-pointer to tie the game. Tarence got the ball for South Carolina. He dribbled quickly down the court. With just 1.3 seconds left, he shot a three-pointer that went right into the net! This amazing shot won the NIT for South Carolina, with a final score of 60-57.
Playing Professional Basketball
After college, Tarence Kinsey started his professional basketball career. He played for many different teams around the world.
Starting with the Memphis Grizzlies
Tarence was not chosen in the NBA draft, but he still made it to the NBA. He played for the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2006–07 season. He played in 48 games and averaged 7.7 points. He even started in 12 games, where he averaged 18.8 points. In 2007, he also played with the Grizzlies in the NBA Europe Live Tour in Spain. He played 11 games for Memphis in the 2007–08 season before moving on.
Playing in Turkey with Fenerbahçe
After leaving the Grizzlies, Tarence signed a contract to play in Turkey. He joined Fenerbahçe Ülker in the Turkish Basketball League. He helped his team win the Turkish League Finals. He also played in the EuroLeague, a top European competition. He averaged 8.8 points in 12 EuroLeague games.
Back in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers
On August 1, 2008, Tarence signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA. At first, he didn't play much. But when other players got injured, Tarence got more playing time. He even started a few games and played very well. He sprained his ankle in a game against Orlando but returned after the All-Star break.
Return to Fenerbahçe and Anadolu Efes
On August 25, 2009, Tarence Kinsey went back to Fenerbahçe Ülker for a second time. He signed a two-year deal with them. In July 2011, he signed a one-year deal with another Turkish team, Anadolu Efes.
Adventures in Italy and Spain
In 2012, Tarence tried out for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA but didn't make the team. Later that year, he signed with Victoria Libertas Pesaro in Italy. In April 2013, he left Pesaro and joined Unicaja Málaga in Spain for the rest of the season.
Time in Serbia and Russia
On September 9, 2013, Tarence signed with the Serbian team Partizan Belgrade. He had a great start, scoring 15 points in his first game. In December, one of his blocks was even chosen as a top play in the EuroLeague! On January 31, 2014, he scored a career-high 32 points in a EuroLeague game. He had one of his best seasons, averaging 14.8 points per game. In March 2014, he got an ankle injury that ended his season.
On August 4, 2014, he signed with the Russian team Nizhny Novgorod. His team made it to the semifinals of the VTB United League.
Winning in Israel with Hapoel Jerusalem
On July 22, 2015, Tarence signed with the Turkish club Trabzonspor. He later moved to the Serbian club Crvena zvezda in December 2015.
On July 23, 2016, Tarence signed a two-year deal with the Israeli club Hapoel Jerusalem. In his first season there, he helped his team win two championships: the 2016 Israeli League Cup and the 2017 Israeli League Championship. They also reached the semifinals of the EuroCup.
Final Years in Spain and France
On September 1, 2018, Tarence signed with Cafés Candelas Breogán in Spain. On December 3, 2018, he moved to JDA Dijon in France for the rest of the 2018–19 season. His last professional team was Orlandina Basket in Italy, where he played from 2019 to 2020.
