Tarryn Thomas (born Tarryn Trindall on March 25, 2000) is a former Australian rules football player. He played for the North Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).
Early Life and Football Start
Tarryn Thomas was born in Sydney, New South Wales. His family has Indigenous Australian roots, from the Kamilaroi and Lumaranatana peoples.
When he was younger, Tarryn played rugby league. He was seen as a promising player and even joined the Penrith Panthers development team.
At age 12, Tarryn moved to Launceston, Tasmania. There, he started playing Australian rules football. He played for the Prospect Hawks and later for the North Launceston Bombers.
In 2016, Tarryn achieved something special. He was named the best under-16 and under-18 player in Tasmania. This happened at national championships in the same year.
North Melbourne chose Tarryn as their first pick in the 2018 national draft. He was the eighth player chosen overall. He had been part of North Melbourne's Next Generation Academy (NGA). This program helps young players from different backgrounds develop their skills. Tarryn finished school at St Patrick's College, Launceston.
AFL Career Highlights
Tarryn Thomas played his first AFL game in 2019. It was in Round 2 against the Brisbane Lions at Marvel Stadium.
In Round 12 of 2019, Tarryn was nominated for the 2019 AFL Rising Star award. He kicked two goals in that game against the Gold Coast.
He had one of his best games in Round 19 of the 2021 AFL season. Tarryn kicked four goals. He helped his team, North Melbourne, win against Carlton.
Tarryn's time with North Melbourne ended before the 2024 AFL season. This was due to issues with his behavior outside of football.
