Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Tartagal River is a river located in the northern part of Salta, a province in Argentina. It flows through the city of Tartagal, which is in the San Martín Department. The river generally flows from west to east. Many smaller streams join it along its path. Eventually, the Tartagal River disappears into a wetland area.

How Does the Tartagal River Flow?

The Tartagal River has a rather short path. The area it flows through has a dry climate. This means the river usually doesn't carry much water. It only gets a lot of water and flows strongly during times of heavy rain. This usually happens in the summer months.

What Happened in 2006?

In April 2006, which is early autumn in Argentina, the region had many weeks of heavy rainfall. Because of all this rain, the Tartagal River overflowed its banks. This caused landslides, which are when a lot of earth and rocks slide down a hill. The floods and landslides badly damaged or completely destroyed bridges and roads along the river. One important road affected was National Route 34. This event caused the city of Tartagal to be almost completely cut off from the rest of the province for several days.

What Happened in 2009?

On February 9, 2009, the Tartagal River experienced another major event. Very heavy rains caused the river to break its banks once more. This time, a large part of the city of Tartagal was flooded. Sadly, this flood resulted in 11 people losing their lives.
