Tassajara is a small place in Contra Costa County, California. It is not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it is an unincorporated community. This means it is part of the larger county area.

The name Tassajara comes from a Spanish word, "tasajera." This word means "a place where meat is hung to dry." It is located near Tassajara Creek. Tassajara is about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) south-southeast of Mount Diablo. It sits at an elevation of 709 feet (216 meters) above sea level. Tassajara is also part of a larger area called a "census designated place" (CDP) with Blackhawk. A CDP is a special area the government uses for counting people.

A Look Back in Time: Tassajara's History

Tassajara has a short but interesting history. Before 1959, the community had a slightly different name. It was known as Tassajero. The name was later changed to Tassajara.

For many years, Tassajara had its own post office. This was a place where people could send and receive mail. The post office was open from 1896 until 1922. After 1922, people in Tassajara likely got their mail from a nearby town.
