Early Life and Youth Football
Tatsuma Yoshida was born in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, on June 9, 1974. When he was in junior high school, he played football for the Hitachi Junior Youth Soccer Club. This is where he started his journey in the world of football.
Playing Career Highlights
After finishing Urayasu High School, Tatsuma joined his hometown club, Kashiwa Reysol, in 1993. He then moved to Kyoto Purple Sanga in 1997.
In 1999, Tatsuma joined Montedio Yamagata, a club that had just been promoted to the J2 League. He became a key player for them, playing as a defensive midfielder. In an exciting moment on the last day of the 1999 J.League Division 2 season, Yoshida scored a goal from a long-range free kick against Oita Trinita. This goal stopped Oita Trinita from being promoted to the top league.
In 2002, Tatsuma moved to Singapore to play for Jurong FC in the S-League (which is now called the Singapore Premier League). After playing in five matches, he decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2002 season.
Coaching Journey
Return to Kashiwa Reysol
Tatsuma Yoshida returned to Kashiwa Reysol in 2003, but this time as a coach. He spent seven years leading the club's youth academy. He helped make it one of the best academies in Japan. Famous Japanese international players like Hiroki Sakai, Masato Kudo, and Kosuke Nakamura developed their skills while he was there.
After his time with the academy, Tatsuma spent three more years as Reysol's sports director. In 2015, he became the head coach of the first team for the 2015 J1 season. In his first year as head coach, his team did well in the 2015 AFC Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals. They lost to Guangzhou Evergrande, who went on to win the competition. Reysol also made it to the semi-finals of the 2015 Emperor's Cup that year. However, their performance in the domestic league was not as strong, and Tatsuma's time as head coach was cut short.
Coaching Other Japanese Clubs
In 2016, Tatsuma was appointed head coach of Albirex Niigata. However, he was let go on September 27, 2016, because the team's performance was not good enough.
He then became the head coach of Ventforet Kofu in 2017. At the end of the 2017 J1 League season, Ventforet was moved down to the J2 League. Tatsuma was later dismissed in April 2018.
Leading Singapore's National Team
On May 30, 2019, Tatsuma Yoshida was announced as the new head coach of the Singapore national team. His first game with Singapore was an exciting 4–3 victory against the Solomon Islands at the National Stadium.
Yoshida extended his contract in 2021. However, he decided to leave the team by mutual agreement on December 28, 2021, due to family reasons. This was shortly after the 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup, where the Singapore team did very well and reached the semi-finals for the first time in nine years.
Return to Ventforet Kofu and Recent Roles
On January 3, 2022, Tatsuma returned to Ventforet Kofu for the 2022 J2 League season. On October 16, 2022, he led his club to win the 2022 Emperor's Cup for the very first time in their history! This win also meant they qualified for their first-ever appearance in the 2023–24 AFC Champions League group stage.
In August 2023, Yoshida became the manager of J2 League club Tokushima Vortis. The team finished the season in 15th place. After a difficult start to the 2024 season, with only 4 points from 7 games, Yoshida was dismissed on March 31. He is currently an assistant coach for Daejeon Hana Citizen.
