Early Life and Youth Football
Tatsuma Yoshida was born in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, on June 9, 1974. When he was in junior high school, he played for the Hitachi Junior Youth Soccer Club. This was where he started his journey in football.
Playing Career Highlights
After finishing Urayasu High School, Tatsuma joined his local football club, Kashiwa Reysol, in 1993. He played there for a few years before moving to Kyoto Purple Sanga in 1997.
Time at Montedio Yamagata
In 1999, Tatsuma joined Montedio Yamagata. This club had just been promoted to the J2 League, which is Japan's second-highest football league. He became a regular player for them, usually playing as a defensive midfielder.
During the last game of the 1999 J.League Division 2 season, Yoshida scored an amazing goal from a long-range free kick. This goal was against Oita Trinita and stopped them from being promoted to the top league, J1.
Playing in Singapore
In 2002, Tatsuma moved to Singapore. He played for Jurong FC in the S-League, which is now called the Singapore Premier League. After playing in five matches, he decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2002 season.
Coaching and Management Journey
After retiring as a player, Tatsuma Yoshida started a new career in coaching and management.
Returning to Kashiwa Reysol
Tatsuma went back to Kashiwa Reysol in 2003. He spent seven years working as the director of the club's youth academy. During this time, he helped make it one of the best academies in Japan. Famous Japanese international players like Hiroki Sakai, Masato Kudo, and Kosuke Nakamura developed their skills while he was there.
After his time with the academy, Tatsuma spent three more years as Reysol's sports director. Then, in 2015, he became the head coach of the first team for the 2015 J1 season.
In his first year as head coach, Tatsuma led Kashiwa Reysol to a good performance in the 2015 AFC Champions League. They reached the quarter-finals but lost to Guangzhou Evergrande, who ended up winning the competition that year. Reysol also made it to the semi-finals of the 2015 Emperor's Cup. However, their performance in the domestic league was not as strong, and Tatsuma's time as head coach was cut short.
Coaching Other Japanese Clubs
In 2016, Tatsuma was appointed as the head coach of Albirex Niigata. However, he was dismissed on September 27, 2016, because the team's performance was not good.
Tatsuma then became the head coach of Ventforet Kofu in 2017. At the end of the 2017 J1 League season, Ventforet was moved down to the J2 League. Tatsuma was later dismissed in April 2018.
Leading the Singapore National Team
On May 30, 2019, Tatsuma Yoshida was announced as the new head coach of the Singapore national team. His first game in charge was an exciting 4–3 victory against the Solomon Islands at the National Stadium.
Yoshida extended his contract in 2021. However, he decided to leave the role by mutual agreement on December 28, 2021, shortly after the 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup. The Singapore team had a great run in that tournament, reaching the semi-finals for the first time in nine years.
Second Time at Ventforet Kofu
On January 3, 2022, it was confirmed that Tatsuma would return to Ventforet Kofu for the 2022 J2 League season. On October 16, 2022, he led his club to win the 2022 Emperor's Cup for the very first time in their history. This victory meant they qualified for their first-ever appearance in the 2023–24 AFC Champions League group stage.
Time at Tokushima Vortis
In August 2023, Yoshida was appointed manager of the J2 League club Tokushima Vortis. He took over after the previous manager left mid-season. The team finished the 2023 season in 15th place. After a difficult start to the 2024 season, with only 4 points from 7 games, Yoshida was dismissed on March 31, 2024.
