Tawanna Phyllis Gaines (February 1, 1952 – November 12, 2022) was an American politician. She served in the Maryland House of Delegates from December 2001 to October 2019. This important group of people helps make laws for the state of Maryland. She represented District 22 during her time in office.
About Tawanna Gaines
Tawanna Gaines was born in Washington, D.C., on February 1, 1952. She went to the District of Columbia Teachers College. Later, she also studied at Towson University. Before becoming a state delegate, she was involved in local government. She served as a council member for the town of Berwyn Heights, Maryland from 1998 to 2000. After that, she was the Mayor of Berwyn Heights from 2000 to 2001.
Her Work in the Maryland Legislature
Tawanna Gaines became a member of the Maryland House of Delegates on December 21, 2001. She was chosen by Governor Parris Glendening to fill a spot that became open. In 2003, she was given an important role as the Deputy Majority Whip. This means she helped lead her political party in the House of Delegates.
She was also a key member of the House Appropriations Committee. This committee is very important because it decides how the state's money will be spent. She even led a special group within this committee that focused on transportation and the environment. Tawanna Gaines was also part of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland. This group works to support the interests of African American citizens in Maryland.
Later Life and Passing
Tawanna Gaines passed away on November 12, 2022. She was 70 years old at the time of her death.
