Tawiah Ben M'Carthy is a talented actor and playwright. He was born in Ghana and later moved to Canada. He is well-known for his play Obaaberima. This play tells the story of a young person's journey of self-discovery.

About Tawiah M'Carthy
Tawiah M'Carthy was born in Accra, Ghana. When he was 14, he moved to Canada. He first lived in Merritt, British Columbia. Later, he moved to Scarborough, Ontario.
His Education and Early Plays
M'Carthy studied theatre at York University. While there, he wrote his first play, The Kente Cloth. He presented this play at the SummerWorks festival in Toronto.
His famous play, Obaaberima, started as a poem. He shared this poem with the Young Creators Unit at Buddies in Bad Times theatre. The play first opened at Buddies in September 2012. Evalyn Parry directed the show.
Awards and Recognition
In 2013, Obaaberima received many important theatre awards. These are called the Dora Mavor Moore Awards. M'Carthy was nominated for two Dora Awards himself. These were for Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role – Play.
His play Obaaberima won three other Dora Awards. One of these was for Outstanding Production of a Play. This shows how well-liked and important the play was.
Other Works and Collaborations
In 2014, Tawiah M'Carthy worked on two new plays. He co-wrote Blue Bird with Brad Cook. He also created Black Boys with Saga Collectif. These plays were first shown as workshop productions.
M'Carthy has also acted in many other plays. He performed in The Boys in the Band and Man 2 Man. He also acted in Balm in Gilead and Love's Labour's Lost. He appeared in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Macbeth. He was also in a short film called Au plus proche.
From 2014 to 2015, he was part of the English Theatre Ensemble. This group performs at the National Arts Centre. He has also worked with other theatre companies in Toronto. These include the Tarragon Theatre and Obsidian Theatre.
In 2016, M'Carthy helped create a show called Black Boys. He worked with Thomas Antony Olajide and Stephen Jackman-Torkoff. This show explored stories about Black Canadian experiences. It first played at Buddies in Bad Times. Then, it went on a tour across Canada. In 2017, the three creators were nominated for an award. This was for Outstanding Ensemble Performance at the Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
In 2018, Tawiah M'Carthy performed Obaaberima again. This revival show was also at Buddies in Bad Times. In June 2020, he performed a part of Obaaberima. This was for the Queer Pride Inside special on CBC Gem. In 2021, he also performed on FreeUp! The Emancipation Day Special.
