Port Gore is famous for being the resting place of a large ship. This ship was a Soviet luxury cruise liner named the Mikhail Lermontov. It was about 170-metre (560 ft) long. The ship sank here on February 16, 1986.

The Mikhail Lermontov sank because it tried to sail through a very narrow passage. This passage is between Cape Jackson and a place called Lighthouse Rock. The ship hit rocks under the water. This caused a lot of damage. The ship then slowly sank into the bay.
