The Arriaga Theatre: Bilbao's Famous Stage
This grand theatre was built in 1890. Its architect was Joaquín Rucoba, who also designed the city hall in Bilbao. The theatre's style is called Neo-baroque. This means it looks like buildings from the Baroque period, which was a time long ago when buildings had lots of fancy details and decorations.
The theatre is named after Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga. He was a very talented musician from Bilbao. People in his time even called him the "Spanish Mozart" because he was so gifted at a young age.
A Theatre's Journey: From Building to Rebuilding
The Arriaga Theatre has faced some challenges. In August 1983, a very big flood hit Bilbao. This flood caused a lot of damage and sadly destroyed the theatre. But the people of Bilbao loved their theatre. They worked hard to rebuild it, and it opened again in 1985. Today, it stands as a symbol of the city's spirit and its love for the arts.
