The Tecate Port of Entry is a special place where people and goods cross the border between the United States and Mexico. It's one of three main crossing points in the busy area around San Diego–Tijuana. This border crossing connects Tecate, California, which is in San Diego County, with Tecate in Baja California, Mexico.

You can reach the Tecate crossing from the U.S. side by using California State Route 188. On the Mexican side, it connects to Paseo Lazero Cardenas and Federal Highway 3. Compared to the bigger crossings like San Ysidro Port of Entry and Otay Mesa Port of Entry, Tecate is a smaller one. This is partly because the roads leading to it on the U.S. side are narrow and winding mountain roads.

A Look Back in Time

The Tecate Port of Entry has been around for a long time! It was first set up before 1919. Back then, many people crossed the border from Tecate, Mexico, to shop at a store called Thing Brothers (which later became the Johnson store) on the U.S. side.

The main building you see today, where people walking across the border are checked, was built in 1933. This historic building is so important that it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

In 2005, the border crossing got a big upgrade and was reopened. Now, cars are checked in a new, larger building that was added behind the old 1933 building. This expansion cost about $18 million and made the crossing about five times bigger than it was before!
