Elmfield House, Teddington, where the council met.

Teddington was a special area in west Middlesex, England. It had its own local government from 1894 to 1937. This area was centered around the village of Teddington.

What Was the Teddington Urban District?

The Teddington Urban District was a type of local government. It was created after the Local Government Act 1894. Before this, a "local board of health" managed the area. The new Urban District Council took over its duties.

How the Council Worked

The council had fifteen members. They met and worked from a building called Elmfield House. This building was on the High Street. The previous board had bought it just before the new council started.

In 1900, the urban district was split into four smaller parts. These parts were called wards. They included Fulwell, Lower Teddington, Upper Teddington, and South Teddington. This helped manage the growing area better.

Why Did the District Change?

The Teddington Urban District was planned to be removed in 1934. This was part of a bigger plan to change local governments. The area was supposed to join a larger district called the Municipal Borough of Twickenham.

Delays in the Change

However, people in Teddington did not want this change to happen. They resisted the idea. Because of this, the change was delayed. The Teddington Urban District continued to operate until 1937.

What Happened to Elmfield House?

Even after the district was abolished, Elmfield House remained important. It continued to be used as council offices for a while. In 1952, it was recognized as a Grade II listed building. This means it is a historically important building. Later, in 2008, the house was sold. It was then changed into private apartments and a dental office.
