Tefft is a small community in Indiana, United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it does not have its own local government. Instead, it is part of Kankakee Township in Jasper County.
History of Tefft
Tefft has an interesting story about how it started.
How Tefft Got Its Name
In 1884, a man named Isaac Dunn planned out the community. He first called it Dunnville. However, people often confused Dunnville with another town. That town was Danville. To avoid this mix-up, the name was changed. The community was renamed Tefft. It was named after Isaac Dunn's brother-in-law, Dr. Benjamin Franklin Tefft.
Early Developments
Isaac Dunn was very active in the area. He also planned a neighborhood about 2 miles north of the town. This area was called Dunn's Original KKK Pleasure Resort. Dunn also helped build Dunn's Bridge. This bridge crosses the Kankakee River.
The Post Office
A post office was opened in Tefft in 1883. It helped people send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. It finally closed down in 2003.
