The very first Tejano Music Awards happened in 1980. It celebrated Tejano musicians and their songs from that year. The awards were given in 11 different groups. Tejano Music's Golden Age
Tejano music became very popular in the 1990s. This was a big time for the music style. A singer named Selena was a huge reason for this. People called her the "Queen of Tejano Music." She won many awards, especially in the female singing categories. Another popular artist was Emilio Navaira, known as the "King of Tejano Music."
In 1995, the Tejano Music Awards celebrated its 15th year. This is like a "quinceañera" for the awards! That year, artists won awards in 14 different groups.
Later Years and Special Awards
After 1995, the popularity of Tejano music changed. However, the awards continued to honor great artists. In 1999, a new award was created. It was called the Lifetime Achievement Award. This special award goes to artists who have made a huge impact on Tejano music over many years.
In 2005, the awards celebrated their 25th year. This was their "silver anniversary." They gave out awards in 14 categories, just like in 1995. The 30th annual Tejano Music Awards happened in 2010. For this special event, they had a unique "decade-ballot" category. This meant artists could win for being the best in the 1980s, 1990s, or 2000s.
The Tejano Music Awards continue to celebrate new and established artists. They help keep Tejano music alive and enjoyed by many fans.
