Temescal Valley (California) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Temescal Valley is a special valley located in Riverside County, California. It's a long, narrow area of land that has sunk down between two cracks in the Earth's crust. This type of valley is called a graben rift valley. It's part of a larger sunken area known as the Elsinore Trough.

Temescal Valley: A Unique Geological Feature

Temescal Valley is found in western Riverside County, California. It's a key part of the Elsinore Trough, which is a big, sunken area of land. This trough lies between the Santa Ana Mountains to the southwest and another land block called the Perris Block to the northeast.

How Temescal Valley Was Formed

The Elsinore Trough is a complex graben. This means it's a valley formed when a block of land drops down between two parallel cracks, or faults, in the Earth's crust. The trough is divided into smaller sections by other faults that cross it. Temescal Valley is one of these sunken sections, located at the northern end of the trough.

The Temescal Valley graben has boundaries on its sides. On the northeast, it's bordered by the Lee Lake Fault. On the southeast, it's bordered by the Glen Ivy Fault. These faults are like deep lines in the ground where the Earth's pieces have moved.

Temescal Creek and Its Path

The middle part of Temescal Creek flows right through Temescal Valley. It starts near Lee Lake and continues until it joins the Santa Ana River.

The valley begins just west of Lee Lake. It lies between the Santa Ana Mountains and the Temescal Mountains to the east. The valley ends where Temescal Creek meets Brown Canyon Creek. At this point, the mountains come closer together, forming a narrow passage.
