Templenagalliaghdoo is an old church from the Middle Ages. It is located in County Mayo, Ireland. Today, it is protected as a National Monument because of its historical importance. This means it is a special place that the government helps to preserve.
Where is Templenagalliaghdoo?
Templenagalliaghdoo is found on a piece of land that sticks out into Lough Conn. This type of land is called a peninsula. It is just north of another old site called Errew Abbey.
History of the Church
The name "Templenagalliaghdoo" means "Church of the Black Nun." This church was built a long, long time ago. It stands on the spot where an even older church once was. That first church was built in the 6th century. It might have been a small prayer room, called an oratory. Or it could have been a place where nuns lived and prayed, known as a nunnery.
What the Building Looks Like
Templenagalliaghdoo is a small church. It has a simple rectangular shape. The walls are quite thick, about 50 centimeters (almost 20 inches). You can enter the church from the southwest side. The church building is surrounded by an enclosure. This enclosure is a wall made of dry stones. It measures about 17 meters by 23 meters.
