Templeton is a small community in the state of Indiana. It is found in Benton County. This area is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it does not have its own local government like a city or town.
When was Templeton founded?
Templeton was started on December 23, 1873. A man named Colonel William J. Templeton and his wife Melissa created the plan for the community. They divided the land into 225 plots for homes and businesses.
How did Templeton grow?
Templeton grew because two important railway lines crossed there. These were the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis (also called the "Big Four") and the Lafayette, Muncie and Bloomington (known as the "Nickel Plate").
The first building in Templeton was a small shack. It was lived in by John Cosgrove. Soon after, Colonel Templeton and others built their homes.

In 1874, Templeton got its first grain elevator. This building helped store and move grain from farms. By 1881, a tile factory opened. It used large, steam-powered ovens to make tiles.

- Joseph Dehart: He ran a shop that sold small items and also a butcher shop.

- The Railroad House: This was likely a hotel or inn near the railway.

In the 1920s, about 150 people lived in Templeton. It still had a grain elevator. There was also a grade school for children. The community had three or four stores where people could buy things.
