Exploring Ten Boer's Past
Ten Boer was first mentioned in records around the year 1301. Its name means "near the house". The village is built on a terp, which is an artificial hill. People built these hills long ago to protect their homes from floods.
Early Village Life
In 1301, a Benedictine monastery was built in Ten Boer. This was a place where nuns lived and prayed. Later, in 1485, it joined with another monastery in Thesinge.

The Dutch Reformed church in Ten Boer used to be the monastery church. It was built in the 13th century. The church was changed a bit in 1565.
Around 1800, the church's tall tower was taken down. In 1810, a small bell tower, called a ridge turret, was put on the roof instead.
Growth and Government
In 1840, Ten Boer was home to 279 people. The old town hall, where local government business was done, was built in 1911. It has a special L-shape and a tower. Its design was influenced by famous architects of that time.
Ten Boer was an independent municipality until 2019. Then, it became part of the larger city of Groningen.
