Tena is a town and a local government area in Colombia. It is found in the Tequendama Province, which is part of the Cundinamarca region. The main part of Tena is located about 1,384 metres (4,541 ft) above sea level. It is also about 42 kilometres (26 mi) away from Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia.

Tena shares its borders with several other towns. To the north, it borders Bojaca. To the west, it borders La Mesa. In the east, you'll find San Antonio del Tequendama. And to the south, it borders El Colegio. The Bogotá River forms the southern edge of Tena.

What's in a Name?

The name Tena comes from the ancient Chibcha language. In this language, Tena means "Place of rest for the zipa." A zipa was an important leader of the Muisca people.

Before the Spanish arrived, the area where Tena is now was home to the Muisca. This region was on the western edge of their lands. It bordered the territories of another group called the Panche.

The modern town of Tena was officially started on December 11, 1607. It was founded by a person named Borja.
