What's in a Name?
The name Tequendama comes from the Muysccubun language. This was the language spoken by the Muisca people. In their language, Tequendama means "he who fell downward."
A Look Back in Time
Early History and Muisca People
The area where San Antonio del Tequendama is today was once called Cubsió. This was a meeting place for the Muisca, who originally came from nearby towns like Bojacá and Serrezuela. People have lived in Cubsió for a very long time. The oldest signs of human life here date back about 1865 years ago, around the 2nd century AD. These ancient sites are found close to the Bogotá River.
Around the year 1470, the lands of San Antonio de Tequendama were ruled by a leader known as the cacique of Fusagasugá. This leader and his people, the Panche, fought against another leader named Saguamanchica in a big battle called the Battle of Pasca.
European Arrival and Town Founding
In 1539, a Spanish explorer named Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada led a trip down the Bogotá River. He sent one of his soldiers, Juan de Céspedes, to explore the area.
The modern town of San Antonio del Tequendama was officially started by Críspulo Corredor in 1857. Over the years, the town's name has changed a few times. It was first called San Antonio, then San Antonio de Tena, and now it's known as San Antonio del Tequendama.
