The Tendoy Mountains are a small mountain range in the U.S. state of Montana. They are found in Beaverhead County, northwest of a town called Lima. These mountains are actually a smaller part of the Beaverhead Mountains, which are themselves part of the larger Bitterroot Range. The very highest spot in the Tendoy Mountains is Dixon Mountain, which reaches about 9,674 feet (2,949 meters) high.

Most of these mountains are quite remote, meaning they don't have many roads. Large parts of them, about 68,000 acres, are wild and untouched.

Exploring the Tendoy Mountains

The Tendoy Mountains are managed by two important groups: the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the US Forest Service. These groups help protect the land and its wildlife.

Northern Tendoy Mountains: Rugged Beauty

The northern part of the Tendoy Mountains is very rugged and exciting to explore. It has deep cuts in the land called Bell and Limekiln Canyons. These canyons feature huge cliffs that are about 700 feet tall! You can also find ledges, piles of rocks, caves, and tall rock walls.

One special rock formation is called Wedding Ring Rock. It's a free-standing rock wall that looks unique. Inside some of the caves, you can even find ancient pictographs, which are drawings made by Native Americans long ago.

The northern mountains are a great home for mule deer. The area has open grasslands, sagebrush plants, and ridges covered with trees. These trees include lodgepole pine and Douglas-fir.

Southern Tendoy Mountains: Wildlife Haven

The southern part of the Tendoy Mountains is quite dry. It doesn't have any streams that flow all year, except for one called Hidden Pasture Creek. This area has patches of Douglas-fir trees and mountain mahogany growing among open sagebrush grasslands.

Many animals live here. Pronghorn and deer use this area all year round. Elk also come to live here during the winter and spring months.
