The Tenerife Arts Space, also known as TEA, is a cool building in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife, Spain. It's a special place for art and culture. It opened in 2008. Famous architects Herzog & de Meuron and Virgilio Gutierrez designed it.

Inside, you can find a special art show by Óscar Domínguez. It also has the main library of Santa Cruz and a photography center. The Cabildo de Tenerife runs the TEA.

Where is the TEA Building?

The TEA building is in the old part of Santa Cruz. It's right next to the Santos ravine. You'll find it close to the Museo de la Naturaleza y Arqueología. It's also near the Nuestra Señora de Africa market and the Church of the Conception.

What is the TEA Building Like?

The TEA building was designed by architects from Switzerland, Herzog & de Meuron. A Canary Islands architect, Virgilio Gutierrez, also helped. It is made of concrete. The building has 1,200 glass windows. These windows come in 720 different sizes and shapes!

A ramp leads to a central open area, like a courtyard. Different parts of the building surround this courtyard. The TEA opened on October 31, 2008. It is a very large building, about 20,622 square meters.

Inside, there's a big hall for events. You can also find a shop and a cafeteria. There's a plaza that is partly covered. The building has two main exhibition halls. One hall shows a permanent collection of art. The other hall features art shows that change over time.

What Can You See Inside TEA?

The TEA building has a special art collection. It focuses on the work of Óscar Domínguez. He was a surrealist painter from Tenerife. The collection includes art bought from the Óscar Domínguez Institute. It also has pieces from the Cabildo de Tenerife.

The TEA also gets art from private collectors. Experts help choose new art to add to the collection. Since it opened, the TEA has shown temporary exhibitions. Many artists have displayed their work here. Some famous names include Patti Smith and Pablo Picasso.

The Photography Center

The Tenerife Island Photography Center is part of the TEA. It helps people learn about visual culture. It also shares and protects old photographs from the Canary Islands.

The center has held over 350 exhibitions. One important event is "Fotonoviembre." This happens every two years since 1991. It shows photos from famous artists and new talents.

The photography collection has old negatives on glass. It also has many photos on paper from the 1800s and 1900s. Some photographers in this collection are Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Bernard Plossú. This entire collection is being made digital.

The "Carla" Sculpture

The "Carla" sculpture outside the TEA building.

Since 2023, a large sculpture called "Carla" stands outside the TEA building. It was made by the artist Jaume Plensa. "Carla" is a female head with closed eyes. It is 7 meters (about 23 feet) tall. It weighs 7.8 tons, which is very heavy!

The sculpture was made in 2018 from cast iron. The Cabildo de Tenerife bought this artwork. It arrived on the island for a special anniversary. It marked 50 years since the first International Street Sculpture Exhibition in Santa Cruz.

The artist said "Carla" was inspired by a 14-year-old girl. However, her head is long and changed. Since it was placed outside, "Carla" has become a symbol of the Tenerife Arts Space.
