Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah ibni Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, born on 17 September 1995, is the heir apparent to the throne of Pahang, a state in Malaysia. This means he is next in line to become the Sultan of Pahang.
He became the heir when his father, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, became the Sultan of Pahang in 2019. Tengku Hassanal is the second son of the Sultan and the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah. He also served as the Regent of Pahang from January 2019 to January 2024. During this time, his father was the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who is the King of Malaysia.

Early Life of Tengku Hassanal
Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah was born on 17 September 1995. His birthplace was the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan, Pahang. He is the fourth child and second son of his parents. At the time of his birth, his father was the Crown Prince of Pahang, known as Tengku Abdullah Al-Haj. His mother was the Crown Princess, Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah. Sadly, his older brother, Tengku Ahmad Iskandar Shah, passed away shortly after birth.
Education Journey
Tengku Hassanal started his schooling at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan St. Thomas in Kuantan. He then continued his studies in the United Kingdom. He attended Caldicott School and Sherborne School for his secondary education.
After that, he went to the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations. There, he earned a Bachelor's Degree in International Relations. This field of study helps people understand how different countries work together. On 13 September 2022, he began his postgraduate studies. He enrolled at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, which is part of the National University of Singapore.
Becoming Tengku Panglima Besar
On 18 June 2018, Tengku Hassanal was given an important title by his grandfather. His grandfather, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah, appointed him as Tengku Panglima Besar of Pahang. This was a special role given to him by the Sultan.
Military Training
As the future leader of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal received military training. He attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. This is a very famous military school. He trained there for 44 weeks in 2019.
He successfully graduated from Sandhurst on 13 December 2019. He was one of 242 cadet officers who completed their training. The graduation ceremony was a big event, attended by Sophie, Countess of Wessex, representing Queen Elizabeth II. On 21 January 2020, Tengku Hassanal was given the rank of Second Lieutenant. His father, Sultan Abdullah of Pahang, officially gave him this rank. After his training, he joined the 4th Mechanised Brigade. He was assigned to the 12th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, which is based in Pahang.
Role as Tengku Mahkota of Pahang
Tengku Hassanal was officially named the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang on 22 January 2019. The title "Tengku Mahkota" means Crown Prince. From January 2019 to January 2024, he served as the Regent of Pahang. This meant he managed the state's affairs while his father was the King of Malaysia.
A special ceremony was held on 29 January 2019. It took place at Balairung Seri, Istana Abu Bakar, Pekan. During this event, Tengku Hassanal took an oath to serve his state and people. His parents, family, and important state officials were there to witness it. Two days later, his parents left for Kuala Lumpur. They went to begin their reign as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) and Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen) of Malaysia.
His first official duty as Regent was to represent Pahang. He attended the swearing-in ceremony of his father as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on 31 January 2019. He also represented Pahang at his father's installation ceremony on 30 July 2019. As Tengku Mahkota, Tengku Hassanal holds several important roles. He is the Chancellor of Universiti Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah (UniPSAS). He is also the President of the State Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MUIP).
