Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah (born 24 October 1930 – died 22 May 2019) was an important ruler in Malaysia. He was the fifth modern Sultan of Pahang, a state in Malaysia. He also served as the seventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, which is like the King of Malaysia, from 1979 to 1984.
Sultan Ahmad Shah stepped down as Sultan of Pahang on 11 January 2019. This decision was made by the Royal Council because of his health. His son, Abdullah, then became the new Sultan of Pahang. Later that same month, Abdullah was also chosen to be the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

About Sultan Ahmad Shah
Sultan Ahmad Shah was born on 24 October 1930 in Pekan, Pahang. He was the only son of Sultan Abu Bakar Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mu’azzam Shah, who ruled Pahang from 1932 to 1974. His mother was Tengku Ampuan Besar Raja Fatimah, a princess from the Perak royal family.
He studied at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar. He also earned diplomas in public administration from Worcester College at the Oxford University and the University of Exeter. He became Sultan of Pahang in 1974 after his father passed away.
In 1979, he was chosen to be the 7th Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Some people thought he might not get along with the new prime minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. However, these rumors were not true, and they worked well together.
Sultan Ahmad Shah was known for being a strong leader. He enjoyed sports like football, golf, polo, and horse riding. He was also the President of the Malaysian Football Association (FAM) for many years, from 1984 to 2014. He also led the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) until 2002 and the Asean Football Federation (AFF) until 2019.
His first wife was Tengku Ampuan Afzan. She was his Queen (Raja Permaisuri Agong) when he was the King of Malaysia. She passed away in 1988. His second wife was Kalsom binti Abdullah, who became the Sultanah of Pahang in 1991. They had a son named Tengku Fahd Mua'adzam.
Abdication and Passing
Sultan Ahmad Shah had been unwell for some time. Because of his health, he stepped down as Sultan of Pahang on 11 January 2019.
He passed away on 22 May 2019, at the age of 88, in Kuala Lumpur. He was buried next to his first wife, Tengku Ampuan Afzan, at the Pahang Royal Mausoleum in Pekan, Pahang. After his passing, the state of Pahang observed 40 days of mourning. Flags across the state were flown at half-mast, meaning they were lowered to show respect. All entertainment events were also cancelled for three days.

Awards and Honors
Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah received many important awards and honors throughout his life.
As the Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 1979 to 1984, he was the Supreme Commander of the Malaysian Armed Forces. This means he was the highest-ranking officer in the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Royal Malaysian Navy, and the Army. He was also the Colonel in Chief of the Royal Malaysian Air Force until 2019.
He received many awards from Pahang and other Malaysian states, showing his important role in the country. He also received honors from other countries around the world, like Argentina, Brunei, Kuwait, Romania, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.
