Discovering Tennyson Point's Past

How Did Tennyson Point Get Its Name?

Tennyson Point gets its name from the Tennyson Estate. This estate was a large piece of land that was divided up in 1887. It was named after a famous poet called Alfred Tennyson.

Who Were the First Land Owners?

Captain William Raven was an important early land owner. He sailed to New South Wales in 1792. In 1795, he was given 100 acres (about 40 hectares) of land here. He received another 285 acres (about 115 hectares) in 1799. This land was known as Grove Farm.

A brewer named James Squire helped manage these properties for Captain Raven until 1822. Today, the very tip of the land that goes into the Parramatta River is called Raven Point. Also, a small creek that flows into Morrisons Bay is now called Grove Creek.

What About the Farnell Family?

In the 1820s, all the land that is now Tennyson Point belonged to Mary Ann Farnell and her husband, Thomas Charles Farnell. Mary Ann was the daughter of James Squire.

Mary Ann and Thomas had a son named James Squire Farnell. He grew up to become the first person born in Australia to be a leader of New South Wales. This position is called the Premier.
