Tenterden is a small town in Western Australia. It is located about 328 kilometers (204 miles) south-east of Perth. The town is part of the Shire of Cranbrook. It is found in the Great Southern area.
Tenterden started as a stop along the Great Southern Railway line. This railway stop was built in 1891. Soon after, the government made land available for farming. The town was officially named Tenterden in 1893. It got its name from a town in Kent, England.
The 2003 Bushfire
On December 27, 2003, a large bushfire happened near Tenterden. The fire started when two power lines touched and caused a spark. This event led to a very serious fire.
The bushfire caused a lot of damage to farms and properties. Many crops and animals were lost. The company in charge of the power lines, Western Power, was later found responsible. They were fined for not keeping the power network safe.
