Tenzompa is a community located in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Its name comes from the Huichol language, an indigenous language, and means "Beautiful Woman." This town is found south of the Huejuquilla El Alto Municipality.

Tenzompa is a small but interesting place. In 2020, about 741 people lived there. It is located about 33 kilometers (20 miles) from Huejuquilla el Alto. It is also about 400 kilometers (248 miles) from Guadalajara, a much larger city.

Who Lives in Tenzompa?

A special part of Tenzompa is its Huichol indigenous population. About 6.54% of the people living here are Huichol. The Huichol people have a rich culture and history in Mexico.

What is Tenzompa Named After?

The community gets its name from the Tenzompa River. This river flows around the community. To the north, Tenzompa is surrounded by the Sierra de Tenzompa mountain range. This mountain range is part of the larger Sierra Madre Occidental.

How Old is Tenzompa?

No one knows exactly when Tenzompa was founded. However, we do know it is very old. It was established even before the Spanish arrived in Mexico. The original town was built on a hill about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from where it is today. This is known because old ruins have been found there.
