The Tepehua are an indigenous group living in Mexico. Their name, "Tepehua," comes from the Nahuatl language. It means "people of the mountain." However, the Tepehua people have their own names for themselves. These names come from Nahuatl, influenced by Spanish.
For example, they use words like masipijní for "the Tepehua people." They also use hamasipiní for "who lives on a hill" and hamasip for "owners of hills." Most Tepehua people live in the Mexican states of Hidalgo, Veracruz, and Puebla. They live in high places, between 240 and 820 meters (about 787 to 2,690 feet) above sea level.
Where the Tepehua People Live
The Tepehua territory is a narrow area in eastern Mexico. It covers parts of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains. There are three main areas where Tepehua communities are found:
The Tepehua people are divided into two main language groups. These groups live in different places:
- Western Tepehua: This group lives in Tlachichilco, Zontecomatlán, and some in Texcatepec.
- Southeastern Tepehua: This group is spread out across Hidalgo, Puebla, and Veracruz. The Southeastern Tepehua group has three smaller parts:
- Southern Tepehua: They live in the municipality of Huehuetla.
- Eastern Tepehua: For many centuries, they lived in Ixhuatlán de Madero. Later, in the 1900s, some moved to Francisco Z. Mena (Puebla) and Pánuco (Veracruz).
- Puebla Tepehua: This group came from Huehuetla (Hidalgo) in the early 1900s. They settled in Totonac communities in Puebla. Most of them live in Pantepec, but also in Francisco Z. Mena and Venustiano Carranza.
