First Feature Film: An Oversimplification of Her Beauty
His first big movie was An Oversimplification of Her Beauty. He wrote, directed, and even composed the music for this film. It also included an earlier short film he made called How Would You Feel?. The movie mixes animation with live action scenes.
An Oversimplification of Her Beauty was first shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. It was also featured at the New Directors/New Films Festival in New York. One expert, Terri Francis, described it as an "experimental film" that explores feelings between friends and in relationships. The movie was released in theaters in 2013.
Awards and Recognition
After his first film, Terence Nance was recognized as one of the top 25 new faces in independent filmmaking. He also received important awards like the Guggenheim Fellowship and the USA Artist Award for his many talents.
Television Success: Random Acts of Flyness
In 2018, Terence Nance's TV show Random Acts of Flyness started on HBO. This show won a Peabody Award and was praised by critics. Terence Nance also makes music under the name Terence Etc.. He released his first music collection, an EP called THINGS I NEVER HAD, in 2020. His first full album, V O R T E X, came out in 2022 on the Brainfeeder Label.
He has also worked on film and TV projects with other artists like TELFAR, Rage Against the Machine, and Earl Sweatshirt. He even created a long film experience with André 3000 for his album New Blue Sun. More recently, he composed the music for Tayarisha Poe’s film The Young Wife, which stars Sheryl Lee Ralph and Leon Bridges.
Art Exhibitions
In 2023, Terence Nance had his first solo art show at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. The show was called SWARM and featured amazing video installations that surrounded the viewers.
