The first Salone del Gusto event happened in 1996. It took place at the Lingotto Fiere conference center. In 2004, a new event called Terra Madre started. It happened at the same time as Salone del Gusto. Terra Madre brought together "food communities" from Slow Food around the world. These are groups of people who grow, prepare, and share food. They do this in ways that protect the environment. They also keep old food traditions alive.

Combining the Events

From 2012, Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre became one big event. In 2016, the name changed to Terra Madre Salone del Gusto. This showed that Terra Madre was now the main part. For the first time, the event was held outside the Lingotto Fiere buildings. It spread across many places in Turin's city center. These places included the Parco del Valentino, the Royal Palace of Turin, and the Teatro Carignano. It also used streets, squares, and other famous spots like the Museo Egizio.

Recent Events and Locations

The event returned to Lingotto for one more time in 2018. In 2020, the physical event could not happen. This was because of a worldwide health situation. Instead, many online events took place throughout that year. The event came back to the streets of Turin in 2022. It was held at a new place called Parco Dora. The event was also held there in September 2024.
