Tessie Aquino-Oreta (born Maria Teresa Aquino Aquino; June 28, 1944 – May 14, 2020) was an important Filipina politician. She served as a Senator and a member of the House of Representatives. She was known for her work in education and culture.

Early Life and Education
Tessie Aquino-Oreta was born on June 28, 1944. Her parents were Benigno Aquino, Sr. and Aurora Aquino-Aquino. She was the youngest child in the Aquino family from Tarlac. Her brother was Ninoy Aquino, a well-known political figure.
She went to primary school at the College of the Holy Spirit. For high school, she studied at Assumption Convent. She earned a degree in Literature and History from Assumption Convent, which is now called Assumption College.
Later, she studied International Studies in Avila, Spain. She also earned a master's degree in National Security Administration. This degree was from the National Defense College of the Philippines. After this, she became a Lieutenant Colonel (Reserve) in the Philippine Air Force.
Political Career
Serving in the House of Representatives
Before becoming a senator, Tessie Aquino-Oreta was a representative for the Malabon-Navotas district. She served in the House of Representatives for three terms. This was from 1987 to 1998.
During her time in the House, she helped create many laws. She wrote or co-wrote about 280 bills. Seventy-nine of these bills became laws. She also proposed 101 resolutions, and 20 of them were approved. She was the first woman to become an Assistant Majority Floor Leader. This important role helps guide laws through the House.
Becoming a Senator
In the 1998 national elections, she was elected as a senator. She ran under the Laban ng Makabayang Masang Pilipino (LAMMP) party. As a senator, she worked on many important issues.
In her three years in the Senate, she filed 197 bills and resolutions. These included laws she wrote herself and others she helped write. She was the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Education, Arts and Culture. This meant she led efforts to improve schools, arts, and culture in the country.
Public Reaction During a Trial
During a major political trial, Senator Aquino-Oreta was seen doing a small dance. This happened after a vote on an important issue. Some people were upset by this, and she was nicknamed "dancing queen." She later apologized for the incident on television. After this, she ran for the Senate again but did not win.
Later Political Attempts
Tessie Aquino-Oreta tried to run for senator again in 2007. She was part of the TEAM Unity group. However, she did not win a seat. In 2016, she ran for Congress in Malabon. She lost this election to Federico "Ricky" Sandoval II.
Personal Life
Tessie Aquino-Oreta was married to Antolin M. Oreta, Jr. He was a businessman. They had four children together. Their children were Rissa, Antolin (LenLen) III, Karmela, and an adopted son named Lorenzo (Enzo). Her sons, LenLen and Enzo, later became mayor and councilor in Malabon.
Death
Senator Aquino-Oreta passed away on May 14, 2020. She was 75 years old. She died from cancer.
