Tetersburg is a small, unincorporated community in Indiana, a state in the United States. This means it is a place where people live, but it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Tetersburg is located in Jefferson Township, within Tipton County.

Tetersburg is also part of the larger Kokomo Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area includes the city of Kokomo and other nearby communities.

History of Tetersburg

Tetersburg was first planned in 1848. It was created on land from two farms, one owned by Mahlon and another by Asa Teter. However, the community was never officially "platted." This means a detailed map showing all the streets and property lines was never formally recorded.

Early Buildings and Community Life

The very first house built in Tetersburg was a log cabin. It was built by two people named Tansy and Cumbaugh. In 1849, the oldest religious group in Tipton County, a Christian church, started in Tetersburg. This shows that the community was growing and people were settling there.

The Railroad's Impact

In 1875, a railroad called the LaFayette, Muncie and Bloomington Railroad was built. However, it was built about one mile north of Tetersburg. This distance had a big effect on the community. A historian named Marvin Pershing said that the railroad "effectively killed the town." This is because railroads often brought growth and business to the towns they passed through. Since the railroad bypassed Tetersburg, it lost out on new opportunities.

The Post Office

A post office was opened in Tetersburg in 1849. This was an important service for the people living there, allowing them to send and receive mail. The post office stayed open for many years but was eventually closed in 1879.
