Tetsuya Totsuka (戸塚 哲也, Totsuka Tetsuya, born April 24, 1961) is a former Japanese football player and manager. He was born in Tokyo, Japan, on April 24, 1961. Tetsuya Totsuka played as a forward or midfielder. He was a very important player for the Japan national team.

Playing for Clubs

Tetsuya Totsuka started his professional football journey in 1979. He joined a team called Yomiuri, which later became Verdy Kawasaki. This team had a "golden era" during his time there. They won the Japan Soccer League five times. They also won the JSL Cup three times and the Emperor's Cup three times.

Totsuka was a fantastic scorer. He was the top scorer in the Japan Soccer League twice. This happened in 1984 and again in the 1990–91 season. In 1992, he made a key pass for a winning goal in the J.League Cup final.

When the new J1 League started in 1992, Totsuka found it harder to play regularly. In 1994, he moved to Kashiwa Reysol. This team was in the second-tier Japan Football League. He helped Kashiwa Reysol get promoted to the top J1 League. Tetsuya Totsuka retired from playing football in 1995.

Playing for Japan

Totsuka was chosen to play for the Japan national team in December 1980. His first game for Japan was on December 22, 1980, against Singapore. This was part of the qualification games for the 1982 FIFA World Cup.

He also played in the 1982 Asian Games. In 1985, he played for Japan again in the 1986 World Cup qualification. This was his last game for the national team. In total, he played 18 games for Japan and scored 3 goals.

Becoming a Coach

After his playing career, Tetsuya Totsuka became a football manager. In 2006, he started coaching Japanese Regional Leagues club FC Gifu. He successfully led them to be promoted to the Japan Football League. However, he left the club in June 2007.

Later in 2007, he joined another Regional Leagues club, FC Mi-O Biwako. He helped this team get promoted to the Japan Football League too. In 2008, he moved to FC Machida Zelvia, also a Regional Leagues club. He managed to promote them to the Japan Football League as well. This meant he promoted three different clubs to the Japan Football League in three years! He left FC Machida Zelvia at the end of the 2009 season. In 2011, he coached SC Sagamihara, but his time there was short.

Amazing Achievements

Tetsuya Totsuka had a very successful career. Here are some of his personal achievements:

  • He was the top goal scorer in the Japan Soccer League First Division twice. This happened in the 1984 season and the 1990–91 season.
