Tetsuya Totsuka (戸塚 哲也, Totsuka Tetsuya, born April 24, 1961) is a famous Japanese football player and manager. He was born in Tokyo, Japan. He played as a forward or midfielder. Tetsuya Totsuka also played for the Japan national team.

Playing Career Highlights

Early Club Days

Tetsuya Totsuka started his football journey in 1979. He joined a team called Yomiuri from their youth squad. This team later became known as Verdy Kawasaki. He played for them for a long time, until 1995.

Golden Era with Yomiuri

During Totsuka's time, Yomiuri (Verdy Kawasaki) had a "golden era." They won the Japan Soccer League championship five times. They also won the JSL Cup three times and the Emperor's Cup three times. Totsuka was a key player in these victories. He was even the top scorer in the Japan Soccer League twice, in 1984 and again in the 1990–91 season.

In 1992, Totsuka helped his team win the J.League Cup final. He made a great pass that led to the winning goal by Kazuyoshi Miura.

Moving to the J.League

In 1992, the Japan Soccer League changed into a new league called the J1 League. After this change, Totsuka didn't play as much for Verdy Kawasaki. In 1994, he moved to Kashiwa Reysol, a team in the Japan Football League. He helped Kashiwa Reysol get promoted to the J1 League. Tetsuya Totsuka retired from playing football in 1995.

Playing for Japan

First Appearances

Tetsuya Totsuka was chosen to play for the Japan national team in December 1980. His first game for Japan was against Singapore on December 22, 1980. This was part of the qualification games for the 1982 World Cup. He also played in the 1982 Asian Games.

Later International Games

In 1985, Totsuka played for Japan again after three years. These games were for the 1986 World Cup qualification. His last game for Japan was during this qualification round. Overall, he played 18 games for Japan and scored 3 goals.

Coaching Career

Promoting Teams to Japan Football League

After retiring as a player, Tetsuya Totsuka became a football manager. In 2006, he started managing FC Gifu, a team in the Japanese Regional Leagues. He helped them get promoted to the Japan Football League. He left the club in June 2007.

Later in 2007, he joined another Regional Leagues team, FC Mi-O Biwako. He also helped this team get promoted to the Japan Football League. In 2008, he moved to FC Machida Zelvia, another Regional Leagues club. He managed them to promotion into the Japan Football League as well. This meant he helped three different clubs get promoted to the Japan Football League in three years! He left FC Machida Zelvia at the end of the 2009 season.

Later Coaching Roles

In 2011, Totsuka became the manager for SC Sagamihara, another Regional Leagues team. However, he left the club in May of that year.
