What Happens Inside Thackeray Hall?

Thackeray Hall is a busy place for students and staff. It is home to the Department of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. This is where students learn about numbers and problem-solving.

The building also has many important services for students. You can go there to register for classes. Students also handle their tuition payments here. It is also the place to get official school records, called transcripts. The Advising Center for the School of Arts and Sciences is on the second floor. They help students choose their classes and plan their studies.

A Look at Thackeray Hall's History

Thackeray Hall was built a long time ago, between 1923 and 1925. It was first used by the National Union Fire Insurance Company. The building has a style called "Early Classical." This means it looks like old Greek and Roman buildings, with strong, simple shapes.

The University of Pittsburgh bought the building in 1968. At that time, it cost about $1.875 million. The university first used it for faculty offices. It was known as the Social Sciences Building.

In 1972, the building got a new name: Mervis Hall. It became the home for the Graduate School of Business. Later, in 1983, the business school moved to a brand new building. That new building was also named Mervis Hall. So, the old Mervis Hall was renamed Thackeray Hall. This is the name it still has today.
