Thane is a small neighborhood in Juneau, the capital city of Alaska. It is located along the Gastineau Channel, about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of downtown Juneau. Thane has around 60 houses spread out over 5 miles (8 km). All the homes are on Thane Road, which ends about 6 miles (10 km) from downtown Juneau. There are no other streets in Thane. The area was named after Bartlett L. Thane, who was a manager for a mining company.
Thane is also important because the main power line for Juneau's electricity runs through it. This power line connects to the Snettisham hydroelectric dam. Sometimes, avalanches can hit this power line, causing power outages. Because of this, the local power company, Alaska Electric Light & Power, keeps backup diesel generators ready to use.
