A Look Back at Thayer
How Thayer Started
Thayer was officially planned out as a community in 1882. It got its name from one of the very first people who settled there. Even before the community was formally established, a post office opened in Thayer in 1881. This was a big deal because it made it much easier for people to send and receive mail.
Living Near the Kankakee River
Thayer is located near the Kankakee River. Because of this, the community, along with other nearby places like Shelby and Sumava Resorts, has sometimes experienced floods. This means the river's water would rise and cover parts of the land. People living in these areas learned to manage and adapt to these occasional high waters.
