A Look Back: Shelby's History
Shelby was officially planned and created in 1886. This happened when a railroad line was built to reach that area. William R. Shelby was the person who helped set up the town.
Where is Shelby? Geography Basics
Shelby is in the southeastern part of Cedar Creek Township. The Kankakee River forms its southern border. This river also marks the line for Newton County. Right across the river is another community called Thayer.
Shelby is about 9 miles (14 km) southeast of Lowell. It's also 6 miles (10 km) east of Schneider and 10 miles (16 km) west of DeMotte.
Indiana State Road 55 crosses the Kankakee River at Shelby. This is one of the few places in Lake County where you can cross the river. Because it's so close to the Kankakee River, Shelby has sometimes experienced flooding.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the Shelby area covers about 1.3 square miles (3.3 km2) of land. There is no water area within its official boundaries.

Local Businesses: Shelby's Economy
A company called Whiteco Industries started as a small advertising business in Shelby. This company, along with its founder Dean White, grew to become very successful. It became involved in billboard advertising and owning hotels across Indiana.
Later, the part of Whiteco's business that was in Shelby, called Modagraphics, closed down in 1993. This happened because its new parent company decided to combine its operations elsewhere.
Learning and Fun: Education and Culture
Students from Shelby attend schools that are part of the Tri-Creek School Corporation. These schools are located in Lowell, Indiana. The old school building in Shelby was changed into a park.
You might have heard of the movie Now and Then. While the movie says it's set in Shelby, Indiana, the town in the movie is actually made up. The story is really based on the town of Winchester, Indiana.
