The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers is an American animated TV show. It mixes exciting sci-fi stories with classic wild west adventures. The show was created by Robert Mandell and Gaylord Entertainment Company. It was shown on TV from 1986 to 1989.

Even though it was made in the United States, the animation was done by a Japanese studio called Tokyo Movie Shinsha. This made it one of the first shows to combine American ideas with an anime-like style. When it first aired, The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers was seen as a very new and exciting children's show.

What's the Story About?

The story takes place in the future, after the year 2086. Two aliens from the planets Andor and Kirwin come to Earth. They are looking for friends to help them fight against the evil Crown Empire, led by the Queen of the Crown. To thank humans for their help, the aliens gave them plans to build a special device called a hyperdrive.

This invention changed everything! People could now travel between stars easily. Many new colonies started popping up on faraway planets. But with more people in space, there was also more crime. The new colonies needed protection from dangers, especially the Crown Empire.

So, a group called "BETA" (Bureau for Extra-Terrestrial Affairs) was created. BETA is like Earth's main military and space exploration team. Its headquarters are on Earth. BETA also has bases in space, like the BETA space station orbiting Earth.

Many of the planets in the show are like old Western towns. They focus on farming or digging for special "star stones." Some planets even have names that sound like places from the American West, such as Nebraska, Mesa, Ozark, and Prairie.

After a big event in the first episode, "Phoenix," one of the main characters, Zachary Foxx, loses his wife to the Queen of the Crown. He then forms a special team called the Galaxy Rangers. Their job is to bring law and order to the new space frontier. They also hope to eventually defeat the Crown Empire. Each Ranger uses a special piece of technology called the Series-5. This tech helps boost their natural abilities.

The Series-5 Brain Implant, or S5, is a powerful device. It helps boost a Ranger's natural skills. It works by using bio-electrical power from special badges worn by the Rangers.

The Crown Empire is ruled by the Queen of the Crown. She is described as evil and controls many planets. She rules them like a cruel boss. The Queen uses creatures called Slaver Lords to control her empire. These Slaver Lords get their power from the mind energy of other beings. When the Empire met humans, the Queen found that humans were perfect for getting this energy.

Meet the Galaxy Rangers

The Galaxy Rangers are a special team, each with unique powers thanks to their Series-5 implants.

Zachary Foxx

Zachary Foxx is the leader of the Series-5 Rangers. He was badly hurt fighting a space pirate named Captain Kidd. Because of his injuries, his whole left side was replaced with bionic parts. This means he can shoot energy blasts from his left arm. He also has amazing strength.

His S5 implant helps power his bionic arm. It can make his muscles super strong or send out powerful energy blasts. These blasts are strong enough to break a wall or even punch through a spaceship's hull! Zachary is married and has two children. Sadly, his wife's mind was taken by the Queen of the Crown. It is now trapped in a "psychocrystal."

Zachary Foxx was voiced by the famous actor Jerry Orbach.

Shane Gooseman

Shane "Goose" Gooseman was created in a lab as part of a government experiment. The goal was to make super-strong mutant soldiers called "Supertroopers." Most Supertroopers became aggressive and unstable because of a special gas. But Goose was lucky. He was at the firing range and missed the gas. This made him the only Supertrooper who wasn't affected.

The other Supertroopers had to be frozen. But some escaped. Goose agreed to join the Galaxy Rangers to hunt down the escaped Supertroopers. His Series-5 implant gives him some control over his body's molecules. This means he can heal quickly, soak up energy, and change his body to fit different environments. Goose's implant makes his body's natural defenses work super fast. This helps him fight the rogue Supertroopers one-on-one. His character is inspired by the actor Clint Eastwood. The show also mentions that he is the only Supertrooper with kindness.

Niko

Niko is an expert in old cultures and has natural psychic powers. She carries a big gun and is skilled in martial arts. Her Series-5 implant makes her psychic abilities even stronger. She can create energy shields, lift objects with her mind, and even see things far away or in the future.

Niko's implant boosts her psychic range from touching things to seeing light-years away! She can also make a shield of energy to protect against attacks. This shield uses a lot of power, but she can get more energy by touching other Rangers. There's often a hint of romance between Niko and Goose in the series.

Niko was born on a failed colony world. She was found by Ariel from the peaceful world of Xanadu. Niko grew up in Xanadu, and her psychic powers were encouraged. When she was 19, she left Xanadu to join the Galaxy Rangers. She became the team's expert on ancient cultures and psychic matters.

Walter Hartford

Walter "Doc" Hartford is a brave and clever character. He fights with a sword, a gun, and his fists. He is also a computer genius. Doc, along with a BETA scientist named 'Q-Ball', created most of the automated systems the Galaxy Rangers use every day.

His Series-5 implants let him talk to and control special computer programs called 'tweakers'. These tweakers look like flying, glowing shapes. Doc's implant gives him amazing computer skills. Commander Walsh once said, "Doc Hartford, your implant makes you a computer wizard, able to conjure fantastic programs."

Doc carries a special computer called a Computer Diagnostic Unit (CDU). This small computer helps him use his implant's power. It also stores his "tweakers" like Pathfinder, Tripwire, Firefly, Searchlight, Lifeline, and Pixel. These "tweaker" programs are very advanced. They let Doc control almost any computer system just by talking to them.

Doc Hartford grew up on the island of Jamaica with rich parents. He went to private schools. He joined the Ranger Corps because he wanted a bigger challenge than just making computer programs for companies.

Key Episodes

The show has 65 episodes, each with a new adventure. Here are a few important ones:

  • Phoenix (Episode 01): This is where it all begins! Zachary Foxx, his wife Eliza, and their kids are on a mission to Kirwin. They are helping aliens build a shield against invaders. But their ship, the Phoenix, is captured by Captain Kidd. He works for the Queen of the Crown, who wants humans for her evil experiments. Zachary is hurt, and Eliza is kidnapped. Back on Earth, Zachary gets bionic parts and a special computer chip in his brain. He helps form the Series 5 Galaxy Rangers, a team with special abilities, to fight the Queen and rescue his wife.
  • New Frontier (Episode 02): The Rangers go to planet Tortuna to find out what happened to Eliza. They find Captain Kidd, who leads them to the Queen's asteroid. The Rangers are captured but manage to escape with Eliza's body. She is in a coma because half of her "psychocrystal" is still with the Queen. Eliza is put into a special sleep until they can get the other half back.
  • Tortuna (Episode 03): The Rangers continue their search for Eliza's missing psychocrystal. They go back to Tortuna undercover to buy a special "memory bird" from a snitch named Geezi. They learn how the Queen has hurt the Gherkin race.
  • Chained (Episode 04): Goose is tasked with taking a dangerous criminal, MaCross, to Earth for trial. MaCross is the leader of the Black Hole Gang. But his gang wants him back, especially because he hid a stash of valuable "Starstones" before he was caught.
  • Smuggler's Gauntlet (Episode 05): Secret DNA formulas from a "Supertrooper" program are stolen. The smugglers plan to sell them to the Queen. Goose saves Zachary in deep space. The Galaxy Rangers track the stolen goods to Tortuna and face the smugglers.
  • Psychocrypt (Episode 23): The Queen uses her half of Eliza Foxx's psychocrystal to trick Zachary Foxx into coming to her Psychocrypt. Zachary is captured, and the Queen tries to use him to create a super powerful psychocrystal. The rest of the Series 5 team must go against orders to rescue Zach with the help of Geezi.
  • Shoot-Out (Episode 39): The Queen of the Crown holds a gun-slinging contest. The prize? Eliza's psychocrystal. This is a big chance for Zachary to get his wife back.

Theme Songs

The show had two memorable theme songs.

"No Guts, No Glory"

This was the main theme song played at the beginning of the show. It was written by Phil Galdston and John Van Tongeren. Van Tongeren also sang it using the name Johnny Vancouver. This song was used in the end credits for the first 35 episodes and episode 37.

"Rangers Ride Forever"

This song, also known as "Rangers Are Forever," was used as the end theme for episodes 36 and 38-65. It was performed by a British rock band called FM. The lead singer, Steve Overland, and his brother Chris wrote the song. FM also performed another song called "Showdown" (or "Out Beyond The Stars"), which was played in some episodes.
