The Birth of Saint John the Baptist is a famous painting by the Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi. She created it around 1635. This artwork was part of a bigger project: a series of six paintings showing different parts of Saint John the Baptist's life. These paintings were made for a special building called the Hermitage of San Juan Bautista in Madrid, Spain. The painting is known for its amazing details, especially the way Artemisia painted the fabrics and floor tiles.

What the Painting Shows

This painting tells a story from the Christian Bible, found in the book of Luke. It's about an old couple named Zacharias and Elizabeth. They were too old to have children.

One day, the angel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias. The angel told him that he and Elizabeth would have a son named John. Zacharias was so surprised that he lost his ability to speak!

Later, their baby boy was born. All the neighbors and midwives thought the baby should be named Zacharias, like his father. But Elizabeth disagreed. So, they asked Zacharias what he thought. He wrote on a tablet, “His name is John.” Right after he wrote this, Zacharias could speak again! This is how Saint John the Baptist began his special life.

About the Artist's Style

Before moving to Naples, Artemisia Gentileschi was known for paintings that focused on everyday life. But in Naples, she started getting many requests from Spanish rulers and churches. This meant she began painting more religious stories.

Even though this painting shows a religious event, it focuses on the people around the baby. You can see the female neighbors and maidservants. This makes the painting feel more like a scene from daily life, rather than just a miracle.

Artemisia had her own unique painting style. However, she was also influenced by other famous artists. These included Caravaggio, Simon Vouet, and Massimo Stanzione. Today, you can see The Birth of Saint John the Baptist at the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain.
