The Book of Night With Moon is an exciting fantasy novel written by Diane Duane in 1997. It's part of the popular Young Wizards universe, but it tells a story for older readers. This book is all about a special team of cat-wizards who protect the world.
The story happens between the fourth and fifth books of the main Young Wizards series. A cool part of the book is that it uses words from Ailurin, the secret language of cats. This language has many more sounds than human languages! You can find a list of these cat words at the end of the book.
In the story, a team of cat-wizards works at Grand Central Terminal. Their job is to make sure special "worldgates" work correctly. These gates are like magical doorways to other places. But when the gates start acting strangely, the cat-wizards must step in. They even face a powerful evil called the Lone Power. Plus, a new cat-wizard with amazing hidden talents joins their team.

What's the Story About?
To her human owners in New York City, Rhiow seems like a normal house cat. She's a sweet black cat who loves food and cuddles. She never seems to leave their apartment terrace.
But Rhiow has a secret life her humans don't know about! She is a powerful wizard. Rhiow leads a special team of other cat-wizards. Their job is to keep the magical worldgates at Grand Central Terminal running smoothly.
Her team includes Urruah, a tomcat who lives in a dumpster and loves opera. There's also Saash, who is very smart and witty. Together, they make sure the city's magical transport system works perfectly.
A New Challenge for the Cat-Wizards
One morning, things get complicated. A wild kitten named Arhu arrives. He is in the middle of his "Ordeal," a dangerous test every wizard must pass. This test helps them gain their full powers.
Arhu joining the team starts a chain of events. Rhiow and her friends are led out of their New York City. They travel to another, much older and more dangerous version of the city. There, they must face the Lone Power. This evil force wants to destroy both cats and humans.
Rhiow and her team must deal with the sudden danger linked to Arhu's fate. They also uncover a terrible secret hidden deep in the cat underworld. This secret could unleash a huge destructive force on the human world. As wizards, they have sworn to protect humans.
Now, the cat-wizards' only hope is to work with creatures who have always been their enemies. These creatures hold the key to saving not only themselves but also the entire human race.
Meet the Characters
Main Cat-Wizards
- Rhiow: She is the leader of the cat-wizard team. Rhiow is the black cat shown on the book's cover. At the start of the story, she is on her fourth life (cats are said to have nine lives!). She lives with two humans, Sue and Mike. Rhiow also makes a short appearance in one of the main Young Wizards books.
- Saash: This tortoiseshell cat is the team's expert on the worldgates' magical connections. She is in her ninth and final life in this book. Saash often feels like her coat is itchy, even when it's not.
- Urruah: He has a lot of magical energy, more than the rest of the team. Because of this, he often provides the power for big magical tasks on the worldgates. Urruah lives in a dumpster and loves listening to opera music.
- Arhu: He is a new and important member of the team. Rhiow's team finds him after he was hurt by rats. Arhu turns out to be a very important part of their mission.
Other Important Characters
- Tom Swale and Carl Romeo: These are human wizards. They are supervisors for the cat-wizard team in the Manhattan area.
- Mike and Sue: These are the humans who live with and feed Rhiow. Rhiow calls them "Iaehh" and "Hhuha" in the cat language, Ailurin. These are the closest sounds Ailurin can make to their real names.
- Ith (full name: Sehhff'hhihhnei'ithhhssshweihh): Ith is a wizard who looks like a lizard. He becomes very important in helping the team with their mission.
- Ehef: This cat is the main feline supervisor in the area.
- Yafh: Yafh is not a wizard, but he appears often in the story. He is a long-time friend of Rhiow's.
