What the Story is About
Imagine spending your holiday near a spooky, ruined castle! That's what happens to Jack, Lucy-Ann, Dinah, and Philip. They are on vacation in Scotland with Dinah and Philip's mother, Aunt Allie.
Soon, strange things start happening at the old castle. The four friends decide to investigate and find out what's going on.
During their adventure, they meet Tassie, a mysterious gypsy girl who lives in the nearby woods with her mother. The children also get help from Bill Cunningham later in the story.
Together, they uncover a secret group of spies! These spies, led by a scary man called Scar-Neck, are working against the UK Military service. It's up to the children to stop them!
The TV Show
The Castle of Adventure was also made into a live-action TV show for children. It was based on Enid Blyton's book. The show had 8 episodes, each about half an hour long. It aired from April 19 to June 7, 1990.
The TV show was made by TVS Films and shown on CITV. It featured famous actors like Susan George, Gareth Hunt, and Brian Blessed. The children were played by Rosie Marcel, Richard Hanson, Hugo Guthrie, Bethany Greenwood, and Eileen Hawkes.
The story in the TV show was very similar to the book. However, the setting was updated to the 1990s. The series was filmed in different locations and at Saltwood Castle in Kent, England.
In the TV show, the children's names are Philip and Dinah Mannering (brother and sister) and Lucy-Ann and Jack Trent (also brother and sister). They stay with Philip and Dinah's mother, Allie, at Spring Cottage.
In the second episode, the four friends meet Tassie, the gypsy girl. She lives in the woods with her mother and is threatened by a character named Sam, also called Scar. Later in the series, Aunt Jane visits the children. Bill Cunningham, whom Allie met at a military meeting, also shows up to help.
After it first aired, the TV show was not shown on regular TV channels again for a while. However, a video version was released a year later, though some parts were cut out. It was also shown on The Children's Channel. You can now find parts of the series on YouTube.
