Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Cheetah Girls started as a popular movie on Disney Channel in 2003. It quickly became a huge hit, gaining many fans. The movie's soundtrack was also very successful, selling over two million copies!

After this big success, three of the original members, Adrienne Bailon, Kiely Williams, and Sabrina Bryan, decided to make music together again. They recorded a song called I Won't Say (I'm In Love) for the Disneymania 3 CD. The fourth member, Raven-Symoné, chose not to join them. She wanted to focus on her own music career.

Adrienne Bailon, who was also on the show That's So Raven at the time, said she understood Raven's choice but was still a bit sad. The three remaining Cheetah Girls kept their character names from the movie for a while: Kiely was "Aqua," Adrienne was "Chanel," and Sabrina was "Dorinda."

When Disney saw how much people loved their new song, they offered the Cheetah Girls a music contract. Raven was asked to rejoin, but she said no again. This made Adrienne upset, and she even left her role on That's So Raven. The group, now with three members, signed a contract with Walt Disney Records. They also stopped using their character names.

Before their first album came out, they released a song called Shake a Tail Feather for the Chicken Little movie soundtrack. This song was a new version of an old song by Ray Charles. Their first album was a Christmas album called Cheetah-licious Christmas. They also made a music video for the title song and performed it at the Walt-Disney Christmas Day Parade and The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Because their Christmas album did so well, they later signed with Hollywood Records. This record label is also owned by Disney but works with more famous artists.

More Movies and TV Shows

A TV show about The Cheetah Girls was also being planned. Raven-Symoné agreed to come back for the TV show and movies only. They filmed four episodes of the show, but then it stopped because That's So Raven was renewed for its last season.

However, all four Cheetah Girls quickly reunited for a movie sequel called The Cheetah Girls 2. They also recorded a soundtrack for this movie. It first aired on Disney Channel on August 25, 2006. After filming The Cheetah Girls 2, Raven-Symoné left the group again, saying she had "lots of work" to do.

The Cheetah Girls (Adrienne, Kiely, and Sabrina) went on a two-month tour in late 2006 to promote The Cheetah Girls 2 album. After the tour, they planned to record their second album. It was not clear if the TV show would ever be made because of Raven's decision to leave the group. If the show did happen, producers said they would add a new character for Jessica Benson.

A third movie, The Cheetah Girls 3, was also being planned. It was even rumored to be released in movie theaters! If The Cheetah Girls 3 was made, all the original members were expected to return. There were also talks that if the third movie did well, the TV series might finally happen, and Jessica Benson might have a role in both the movie and the TV show.
