Kiely Williams' Music Journey
Starting with 3LW
In 1999, Kiely Williams, Adrienne Bailon, and Naturi Naughton formed the girl group 3LW. Kiely's mom helped put the group together and managed them. 3LW signed with Epic Records and started working on their first album.
Their first song, "No More (Baby I'ma Do Right)", came out in late 2000. It was a big hit! Another popular song, "Playas Gon' Play", followed in early 2001.
The group's first album, also called 3LW, was released in December 2000. It sold over a million copies in the U.S. In 2001, 3LW went on the MTV Total Request Live tour. They performed with other big stars like Destiny's Child and Nelly.
3LW also sang on a special song called "What More Can I Give". This song featured many famous artists like Michael Jackson and Beyoncé. It was made to help people after the 9/11 attacks. They also sang "Parents Just Don't Understand" for the Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius movie soundtrack.
Kiely also appeared on TV shows during this time. She was in an episode of Taina and The Jersey.
Challenges and Changes for 3LW
In 2002, 3LW worked on a new album. Some of their songs were leaked online, which caused problems. Fans started a campaign to support 3LW, and the group stayed with their record label.
They released a new song, "I Do (Wanna Get Close To You)", in the summer of 2002. They also had a concert special on Nickelodeon. Just before their album A Girl Can Mack was released, Naturi Naughton left the group. This was after some disagreements.
Kiely and Adrienne continued as a duo, still using the name "3LW". This change affected the group's popularity. In 2003, Jessica Benson joined 3LW as the new third member. She helped the group keep going. Later that year, 3LW signed with Jermaine Dupri's So So Def label.
Becoming a Cheetah Girl
While working on new music for 3LW, Kiely and Adrienne got a chance to star in a Disney Channel movie. It was called The Cheetah Girls. They played two of the four members of a girl group in the movie. Raven-Symoné and Sabrina Bryan played the other two.
The movie came out in August 2003 and was a huge hit! The movie's soundtrack also sold millions of copies. Because the movie was so popular, Walt Disney Records created a real-life girl group. This group included Adrienne, Kiely, and Sabrina. Raven-Symoné decided not to join, focusing on her solo career and TV show That's So Raven.
The Cheetah Girls released a Christmas album called Cheetah-licious Christmas. In 2006, they signed with Hollywood Records.
More Cheetah Girls Adventures
The Cheetah Girls then filmed a sequel, The Cheetah Girls 2. Raven-Symoné returned for this movie. It premiered in August 2006 and was watched by over 8 million people. It became the highest-rated Disney Channel original movie at the time!
The soundtrack for The Cheetah Girls 2 was also very successful. It sold over a million copies. The Cheetah Girls then started working on their first studio album, not just a soundtrack. Their album, TCG, came out in September 2007. It included the song "Fuego".
Even though Kiely and Adrienne were busy with the Cheetah Girls, they were still part of 3LW. However, work on 3LW's fourth album slowed down. There were some challenges with balancing both groups. In 2008, Adrienne confirmed that 3LW had officially broken up. Kiely and Adrienne then focused completely on the Cheetah Girls.
In 2008, the third Cheetah Girls movie, The Cheetah Girls: One World, was made. This movie took the Cheetah Girls to India. Raven-Symoné did not return for this film. The movie was watched by over 6 million people. Kiely sang a solo song called "Circle Game" for the movie's soundtrack.
In November 2008, Kiely confirmed that the Cheetah Girls group had officially broken up. The members wanted to work on their own singing and acting careers.
Solo Projects and New Beginnings
After the Cheetah Girls, Kiely started working on her own music. She filmed a music video for her song "Make Me a Drink" in 2008. This song was later leaked online.
Kiely also continued acting. She starred in the movie Elle: A Modern Cinderella Tale. For this role, she recorded several songs and learned a lot of dancing. She also appeared in Stomp the Yard: Homecoming. Both movies were released in 2010.
In 2010, Kiely released her first official solo song, "Spectacular". She also released a music video for it.
Web Series and BluPrint
Kiely Williams and Sabrina Bryan (from the Cheetah Girls) worked together on web series. They co-starred in "Dinner With Friends" and "March Moms".
In 2021, Kiely starred in BET Presents: The Encore. This show followed the creation of a new R&B supergroup called BluPrint. Kiely joined Shamari Devoe and Fallon and Felisha King (from the group Cherish). Their first album, an EP, was released in August 2021.
