Life and Career Highlights
Early Life and Music Beginnings (1983–2002)
Adrienne Bailon was born on October 24, 1983. Her mother is from Puerto Rico, and her father is from Ecuador. She grew up in Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York. Adrienne has an older sister named Claudette. She went to school in Brooklyn and later to a high school for health professions. Even though she wanted to be an obstetrician (a doctor who delivers babies), her love for music changed her path.
In October 1999, Adrienne was discovered by famous Latin pop singer Ricky Martin. She was singing in a church choir at Madison Square Garden. Ricky Martin chose her and three other singers to perform as backup singers for his concert that night.
After this amazing experience, Adrienne joined the girl group 3LW. The other members were Kiely Williams and Naturi Naughton. Adrienne shared that she was found by a producer during a school trip. She was excited to join a girl group, coming from a humble background without any "Hollywood" connections.
3LW signed with Epic Records and started working on their first album in 1999. Their first song, "No More (Baby I'ma Do Right)", came out in late 2000. It was a hit! Then came "Playas Gon' Play" in early 2001. The group's first album, 3LW, was released on November 14, 2000. It sold 1.3 million copies in the U.S., earning a platinum award.
In 2001, 3LW went on the MTV Total Request Live tour with other big stars like Destiny's Child and Nelly. They also recorded a song called "What More Can I Give" with many artists, including Michael Jackson and Beyoncé, to help after the 9/11 attacks. Later in 2001, they worked with Lil' Romeo and Nick Cannon on "Parents Just Don't Understand" for the Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius movie soundtrack.
In 2002, 3LW was recording a new album. Some of their new songs were leaked online. Despite this, fans supported them, and the group stayed with their label. They released a new song, "I Do (Wanna Get Close To You)", produced by P. Diddy. That summer, they had a concert special on Nickelodeon. However, before their new album A Girl Can Mack was fully released, Naturi Naughton left the group due to disagreements. The album's release was delayed, and sales were lower than expected.
The Cheetah Girls and Acting Career (2003–2008)
After Naturi left, Kiely Williams and Adrienne continued as a duo, still called "3LW." In early 2003, Jessica Benson joined the group as the third member. This helped 3LW continue. In late 2003, 3LW signed with Jermaine Dupri's So So Def label and started working on their fourth album.
While working on music, Adrienne and Kiely also starred in the Disney Channel movie The Cheetah Girls. They played two of the four members of a girl group, along with Raven-Symoné and Sabrina Bryan. The movie came out in August 2003 and was very popular. The movie's soundtrack was also a big hit, selling millions of copies. Adrienne also had a role on Disney Channel's That's So Raven as Alana. In 2005, she appeared in the movie Coach Carter.
Walt Disney Records then created a real-life girl group called The Cheetah Girls with Adrienne, Kiely, and Sabrina. Raven-Symoné chose to focus on her solo career. The trio released a Christmas album called Cheetah-licious Christmas in 2005. They later signed with Hollywood Records in 2006. Adrienne then starred in the MTV movie All You've Got with singer Ciara.
The Cheetah Girls returned for a sequel, The Cheetah Girls 2, which premiered on August 25, 2006. It was watched by 8.1 million viewers, becoming a very highly-rated Disney Channel movie. The soundtrack was also very successful. The Cheetah Girls then started working on their second studio album, TCG, which was released in 2007. It included the popular song "Fuego".
Meanwhile, 3LW's fourth album, Point of No Return, faced delays because Adrienne and Kiely were busy with The Cheetah Girls. The album was never officially released. In 2008, Adrienne confirmed that 3LW had officially broken up. She and Kiely decided to focus fully on The Cheetah Girls.
In 2008, The Cheetah Girls filmed their third movie, The Cheetah Girls: One World, in India. It was about the group going to India for a Bollywood movie. Adrienne sang two solo songs for the movie's soundtrack: "What If" and "Stand Up." In November 2008, the group officially disbanded so the members could pursue their own careers.
New Projects and TV Shows (2009–2013)
After The Cheetah Girls broke up, Adrienne signed with Columbia Records to work on her first solo album. Her first songs released were "Uncontrollable" and "Big Spender" for the movie soundtrack Confessions of a Shopaholic in 2009. She also sang on the Ghostface Killah song "I'll Be That."
In 2009, Adrienne hosted a show called New Afternoons on MTV. In 2012, Adrienne announced she was part of a reality show called Empire Girls: Julissa and Adrienne with her friend Julissa Bermudez. Adrienne also appeared in the music video for Pitbull's "Give Me Everything".
In 2012, Adrienne left Island Def Jam. She starred as Katalina Santiago in the film The Coalition, released in 2013. She also appeared in the ABC Family TV movie, Lovestruck: The Musical, where she sang "Like A Virgin" and "Everlasting Love."
