Tamar Estine Braxton (born March 17, 1977) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and television star. She is known for her powerful singing voice and her work in music and on TV.
Braxton started her music career in 1990 with her sisters in an R&B group called The Braxtons. They released their first album, So Many Ways, in 1996. After the group separated, Tamar began her solo career. In 2000, she released her first album, Tamar.
After a break from music, she returned in 2013 with her second album, Love and War. It was a huge success and reached number two on the Billboard 200 music chart. She later released more albums, including Calling All Lovers (2015) and Bluebird of Happiness (2017). Throughout her career, Braxton has won a BET Award and three Soul Train Music Awards. She has also been nominated for four Grammy Awards.
Besides music, Braxton is a well-known television personality. From 2011 to 2020, she starred in the reality show Braxton Family Values with her mother and sisters. She was also a co-host on the talk show The Real from 2013 to 2016. In 2019, she won the second season of the reality show Celebrity Big Brother.

Early Life
Tamar Estine Braxton was born in Severn, Maryland, on March 17, 1977. She was the youngest of six children. Her parents were Michael and Evelyn Braxton. She started singing when she was just a toddler. Her father was a pastor, and all the Braxton children sang in their church choir.
Music and Television Career
1989–1998: The Braxtons
In 1989, Tamar and her sisters, Toni, Traci, Towanda, and Trina, signed a record deal with Arista Records. They formed the group The Braxtons. Their first single, "Good Life", was released in 1990 but wasn't a big hit.
Soon after, Toni Braxton was signed as a solo artist. The other sisters became backup singers for Toni's first tour. They even appeared in her music videos.
In 1996, Tamar, Trina, and Towanda released the album So Many Ways as a trio. The album did well on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The group performed with famous artists like Jay-Z. After touring with Toni, the group decided to go their separate ways. Tamar left to start her solo career in 1998.
1999–2009: Solo Career Beginnings
Tamar released her first solo album, Tamar, in 2000. The lead single, "Get None," featured the producer Jermaine Dupri. The album reached number 127 on the Billboard 200 chart. After the album's second single did not get much radio play, she was dropped by her record label.
During this time, she continued to work with her sister Toni. She co-wrote songs and sang backup vocals on several of Toni's albums. She also appeared in Toni's music videos, like "He Wasn't Man Enough".
2010–2013: TV Stardom and Love and War
In 2011, Tamar and her family began starring in the reality TV show Braxton Family Values. The show was very popular and made Tamar a household name. She and her husband at the time, Vincent Herbert, also got their own show called Tamar & Vince.
In 2012, Braxton signed a new record deal. She released the single "Love and War" in December 2012. The song was a huge success. It was number one on the Adult R&B Songs chart for nine weeks.
Her album, also titled Love and War, came out in 2013. It sold 114,000 copies in its first week and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2013, she also became a co-host on the daytime talk show The Real.
2014–2019: More Music and Reality TV
In 2015, Braxton released her next album, Calling All Lovers. That same year, she competed on the TV show Dancing with the Stars. She had to leave the competition early due to health problems but finished in fifth place.
In 2017, she released the album Bluebird of Happiness. She said this would be her last album, but she later returned to music.
In 2019, Braxton competed on Celebrity Big Brother and won. She was the first African-American person to win the American version of the show.
2020–Present: New Projects
Braxton has continued to work in television and film. In 2020, she starred in the movie True To The Game 2. She also released a new song for the film called "Crazy Kind of Love."
She hosted the VH1 series To Catch A Beautician and starred in the docu-series Tamar Braxton: Get Ya Life!. In 2023, she released the single "Changed", which became a top 10 R&B hit. She also voiced a character in the animated series Young Love. In March 2024, she released another single, "Notice Me."
Artistry
Braxton is known for her impressive four-octave soprano vocal range. This means she can sing very high notes. She can even sing in the whistle register, which is the highest range of the human voice.
She has said that her musical influences include Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, and her older sister, Toni Braxton.
Personal Life
In 2012, Braxton shared that she has a skin condition called vitiligo. In 2015, she had a serious health scare when doctors found blood clots in her lungs. This forced her to leave Dancing with the Stars. In 2020, she said that she has been diagnosed with anxiety and depression.
Braxton was married to producer Darrell "Delite" Allamby from 2001 to 2003. She later married record executive Vincent Herbert in 2008. They have a son named Logan, who was born in 2013. Braxton and Herbert's marriage ended in 2019.
