Early Life and Family Background

Tamar Estine Braxton was born in Severn, Maryland, on March 17, 1977. Her parents are Michael and Evelyn Braxton. She is the youngest of their six children. Tamar started singing when she was very young. The Braxton children all sang in their church choir. Their father, Michael Braxton, was the pastor.

Music Career Beginnings

1989-1998: The Braxtons Group

Tamar and her sisters Toni, Traci, Towanda, and Trina signed their first record deal in 1989. This was with Arista Records. In 1990, they released their first song, "Good Life." It reached No. 79 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart.

The age differences among the sisters caused marketing problems. So, The Braxtons group was dropped from Arista Records. In 1991, Toni Braxton was chosen to be a solo artist. She signed with LaFace Records. The other sisters were told that LaFace was not looking for another girl group.

After Toni left, the remaining sisters became backup singers for Toni's tours and music videos. In 1993, The Braxtons signed with LaFace again. But they never released an album there. When their manager moved to Atlantic Records, he took the group with him. In 1995, Traci Braxton left the group. She was pregnant and could not sign with Atlantic.

In 1996, Tamar, Trina, and Towanda released a new album called So Many Ways. It reached No. 26 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The group also performed a remixed version of "So Many Ways" with rapper Jay-Z. This was at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards in 1996. The song reached No. 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The Braxtons opened for Toni Braxton's European tour in 1997. The group decided to split up after Tamar left to start her solo career in 1998.

1999–2009: Solo Album and Challenges

Tamar met producer Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. She recorded her first solo album, Ridiculous. It had many different music styles. Two songs, "Let Him Go" and "Just Cuz," were released to get attention. But they did not do well on the radio. So, the album was delayed and then canceled.

Instead, Dreamworks Records changed the album. They removed old songs and added new ones. They renamed it Tamar. The first song, "Get None," was produced by Jermaine Dupri. It also featured rap verses from him and Amil. The album was released in early 2000. It reached number 127 on the Billboard 200. When the second song, "If You Don't Wanna Love Me," did not get much radio play, her label dropped her.

In 2001, Tamar's song "Try Me" appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Kingdom Come. She also worked with her sister Toni Braxton. She sang backup vocals and helped write songs for Toni's albums. These included The Heat (2000) and Snowflakes (2001). Tamar also sang backup for Toni's Las Vegas show.

By 2004, Tamar signed with Tommy Mottola's Casablanca Records. She started working on her second album. A song called "I'm Leaving" was released. It featured Bump J.

It was a big success, staying at #1 on the Adult R&B Songs chart for 9 weeks. The song reached number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Tamar released "The One" as the second song from Love and War in May 2013. It reached number 34 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The third song, "All the Way Home," was released in August 2013. It reached number 96 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The album Love and War was released on September 3, 2013. It sold 114,000 copies in its first week. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. It was number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

In 2013, Tamar became a co-host of the talk show The Real. It started on July 15, 2013. The second season of Tamar & Vince began in September 2013.
