The Bakery's Beginning
How It Started
The Claxton Bakery was started by Savino Gillio-Tos. He was born in Italy in 1885. In 1902, he moved to the United States. He first worked as a master baker in a hotel in New York City. Later, he moved to Macon, Georgia, and then to Claxton.
Mr. Gillio-Tos's bakery became very popular. He made many baked goods, homemade ice cream, and fruitcakes. In 1945, he decided to retire. He sold the bakery to Albert Parker, who was one of his employees.
Growing with Albert Parker
Focusing on Fruitcakes
After Albert Parker took over, the Claxton Bakery started to focus mostly on fruitcakes. In the 1950s, they began selling fruitcakes to help groups raise money. This was a new and successful idea.
Helping Others and Big Events
One of the first groups to partner with the bakery was Civitan International. Since 1951, Civitan members have sold many fruitcakes. They use the money to help people with disabilities.
The bakery also took part in big events. In 1964 and 1965, their fruitcakes were featured at the 1964 New York World's Fair. This helped them become even more well-known.
Parades and Partnerships
Albert Parker was very good at sharing his fruitcakes with the world. He had floats in famous parades. These included the Orange Bowl Jamboree Parade in Miami and the Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, D.C..
Today, the Claxton Bakery works with over a thousand groups. These groups are all across North America. They continue to sell Claxton fruitcakes for their fundraising efforts.
New Leadership
Albert Parker passed away on May 21, 1995. His three sons and his daughter now manage the company. They continue the family tradition of making famous fruitcakes.
