The Crowning with Thorns is a famous painting created by Anthony van Dyck between 1618 and 1620. He was only about 20 years old when he painted it! At that time, van Dyck was working as a main helper and student for the very famous artist Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp.
This painting shows how much Rubens influenced van Dyck. You can see it in the colors, which are a bit dark and serious. It also uses a technique called chiaroscuro, which means using strong contrasts between light and dark to make things look more dramatic. The muscles of the people in the painting look very real. Van Dyck might have finished this painting when he was in Italy, because you can also see the influence of other artists like Titian in the face of Jesus.
Journey of the Painting
After van Dyck finished the painting, he offered it to his teacher, Rubens. But Rubens decided not to keep it. Later, Philip IV of Spain bought the painting. It was kept in a place called the Escorial for a long time. In 1839, the painting moved to the Museo del Prado in Madrid, where it is still displayed today.
