The Daily Pennsylvanian (often called The DP) is a special newspaper made by students at the University of Pennsylvania. It's published every day and is completely independent, meaning it makes its own decisions.
How The DP Started
The Daily Pennsylvanian began a long time ago in 1885. It started publishing daily in 1894. There was a short break during World War II from 1943 to 1945.
In 1962, The DP decided to become independent from the university. This meant it could report news freely. To make sure it stayed independent, it became a company in 1984. Today, the newspaper pays for itself mostly by selling ads. Students who work on the business side handle this.
Amazing Awards and Recognition
The Daily Pennsylvanian has won many top awards for college journalism. These awards show how good the students are at reporting and writing.
In 2008, it won the National Mark of Excellence Award. This award is from the Society of Professional Journalists. That same year, it also won the Columbia Gold Crown. Only a few college newspapers across the country get this award. The DP has won it many times!
It also won first place in the Associated Collegiate Press's Best of Show Competition in 2008. In 2004, The DP won the Pacemaker. This was amazing because it won for the fourth year in a row! It also won this award in 1990, 1997, 1998, and 2007.
Many of its writers also win Gold Circles from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association every year. The Princeton Review even called it the "most read" college newspaper several times. This was in 1990, 1997, 1998, and 2001. In 2006, it won first place for Best Online Sports Coverage. In 2008, its website, dailypennsylvanian.com, won an online Gold Crown award.
